History will record that the year 2020 began by putting the global community through an unprecedented public test.
Because of all the pain and measures it has imposed, this test has given rise to new ways of living, learning, working, listening, speaking, acting and connecting in the age of social detachment, as well as a new common conscience.
Amid all the sadness, fear, division and doubt, a new world has surfaced, in which well-being is regarded as a treasure of the common good.
As unhappy as we are with the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we lament the dramatic loss of lives, jobs and hopes, we are also taking great hope for what is happening in our world today. The world community is putting forth a sense of interdependent compassion, and a sincere desire to value one’s common humanity and to (re)connect in a more fraternal and spiritual way.
We are relational beings. Even though we serve only one person, through them, we love and serve all humanity. Therefore, we envision a world in a network where we heal divisions and where gifts are reciprocal, giving people access to the most basic psychological and material resources to allow them to live with dignity.
The common experience of anguish and confinement associated with this time of trial amid a pandemic, has given rise to an initiative, initially launched in Brazil by our colleague Andrea Perez, titled "Learning with empathy", which Junior Miranda, also Brazilian, decided to expand to Portugal.
The UNESCO Chair of Education for Sustainability of Global Peace at the University of Lisbon embraced the challenge of expanding the project, uniting the world’s most prominent names on themes of peace and mental, relational, environmental, community and physical well-being, with those who are currently struggling to have their most basic needs met.
On April 9, 2020, we invited academics and professionals – from the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA), the Taos Institute and other international organizations of researchers and stakeholders – to offer their knowledge voluntarily, creating original digital conferences on topics of their specialty. Then, we invite the public to register to attend these conferences made available on a platform, offering a financial donation to support organizations that contribute to communities and families that need help.
In about 24 hours, we had 40 pioneers from 20 countries and 5 continents saying: YES!
This is proof of their ability to love those who are most vulnerable, while sharing that at which they excel.
Thus, we created a global movement entitled Humanity for Hope (H4H): opening our hearts to compassion, positive peace and the well-being of all. This is an event supported by a platform on which you can access around 30 lectures by some of the most influential specialists in different types of well-being and buen-vivir. The lectures are pre-recorded and vary in duration.
These specialists/speakers, at the time of this letter, are based in more than 20 countries in different continents. The presentations will be primarily recorded in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with a few available in French and Arabic. A group of more than 40 volunteers is dedicated to the project, having translated and subtitled many of the lectures. Lectures will be recorded on video and participants will be able to access the content at any time after registration. On the platform, we have links to several organizations in different countries that are currently acting to support those unable to fulfill their basic needs. The transparency of the donation process is guaranteed. The fee to participate in the platform is small, to encourage anyone with access to the internet to learn from the speakers. Even so, and for those who have better financial conditions, there are different levels of financial contribution. The bigger the donation, the more families and communities we can support.
We are thus touching different types of needs and goods – the more emotional, physical, relational, environmental, or economic ones through the knowledge shared in the lectures, which are aimed at a large audience from all over the world – while also providing tangible goods and services for the most vulnerable.
In addition, we will gather data on the current resilience of the participants, their families and communities, using a questionnaire that will be made available. In order to engage them and create an opportunity for dialogue, we will ask you to send a short video or text about the impact of participation in the Global H4H Movement.
We are aware that this is a remedial approach; but we also trust that it can be transformative through the majestic way in which all caring hands were extended to others.
We invite all those interested in this initiative to get involved with the conference platform through the link disclosed and shared on our social media. In the meantime, we would like to extend our thanks for doing everything possible to help minimize the economic and psychological impacts on exposed people and communities.
Light is often in the deep center of our shadows. No true or profound transformative or spiritual path separates us from the world and the humanity’s wounds; on the contrary, suffering invites us to look at the world with renewed hearts and to sink our hands into the wounds of all.
Although it is too early to know how different the world can be post-COVID-19, only working together for goodness and a vision of a renewed future can draw our eyes towards a new horizon, stir up our common energies, and give strength to our actions for a better humanity. And then, yes, we will make real changes towards a more just, fraternal and harmonious world, where we co-build our communiverses (Gergen, 2020) and stand together.
